Since Malaysia has some differences in race, religion and culture, most of the cuisine usually reflects the multiethnic race in this country. Usually, every race in this country has their own cuisine represent their culture. If you are serious eater, then here are some famous foods that you should try in Malaysia.

Nasi lemak ayam

1. Nasi lemak

Malay fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf. It is served with anchovy spicy chili sauce, fried anchovy, some slices of cucumber, fried peanuts and hard-boiled egg. Sometimes, the dish also served with chicken or squid spicy chili sauce instead of anchovy. Traditionally, nasi lemak are wrapped in a banana leaf and it is the most popular breakfast choice among Malaysian. Today, we can found there are variety of nasi lemak served with chicken, meat, squids or even the cockles.

Roti canai

2. Roti canai

Roti canai is the most famous food in Malaysia which has so many types such as roti sardine, roti nan, roti paratha and much more. This dish is originated from south Indian. It is composed of flour, egg and oil and is served with dhal or any type of curry.


Nasi ayam

3. Nasi ayam

Nasi ayam is originally adapted from Chinese immigrant and it is served with steamed or roasted chicken, and comes with dipping sauce made from a mix of tomato, chilies and garlic and also accompanied by the dark sauce or soy sauce, fresh cucumber and soup.

Chicken satay

4. Satay

Satay or in Malay ‘sate’ is a dish of meat seasoned and marinated with spice which is then skewed and grilled over a charcoal fire. It is usually served with sweet dipping sauce made from peanut. Satay is a popular dish especially during celebrations.


Beef rendang

5. Rendang

A traditional and most commonly found during Hari Raya (Muslim’s celebration after fasting) served with glutinous rice or rice cake, this dish is cooked in a dry curry, coconut milk and some spices. Rendang usually consist of beef or chicken. It gives sweet and savory elements and often eats with peanut sauce.

Char kuew teow

6. Char kuew teow

A stirred-fried noodle dish which is cooked on a very high heat for a few minutes. It is commonly mixed with soy sauce, blend chilies, cockles, prawns and bean sprouts accompanied with less commonly ingredients.

7. Murtabak

Murtabak is one of the famous street foods and has the same looks with roti canai. However, it consists of some minced meat, egg and onions. It is also served with dhal or any types of curry. This dish is literally has a high demand during Muslim’s fasting month (Ramadhan).


If you are not a serious eater or dare to try, don’t worry, there’s a lot of restaurants where you can buy your native food especially Korea, Japanese and Arabic or even the fast food restaurants.
